There are mountains and then there is Aoraki. At 3,724 metres, New Zealand's highest peak commands the landscape, rising from the Hooker Valley floor, flanked by the glaciated ranges of the Southern Alps. Sacred to Ngāi Tahu, who know this mountain as the ancestor from whom they descend, Aoraki carries a significance that goes far beyond its extraordinary height.

Lyttelton wakes slowly. This photograph catches the harbour town in that quiet window before the working day begins — the port cranes standing still against a sky of extraordinary pink and blue, the hills of Banks Peninsula rolling away into the distance, and the water of the harbour sitting flat and calm below. It's a side of Lyttelton that only the early risers know.
