As Lake Wakatipu reaches south from Queenstown, the further you go the wilder it gets.
This photograph looks across the lake near the famed Devil’s Staircase. Snow clinging to the high peaks, cloud caught on the ranges, and golden tussock running down to the water's edge. It is the quieter, less photographed side of Wakatipu — no township or boats, just the glorious presence of the mountains.

Ancient Ones — Moeraki Boulders
The Moeraki Boulders have been here for sixty million years. To Ngāi Tahu, they are the eel baskets and gourds washed ashore from the great canoe Āraiteuru, scattered along this stretch of Otago coastline in a moment of ancient shipwreck. To the geologist, they are concretions formed on the seafloor over millennia. To anyone standing among them on a stormy day, they are great playthings in the sand.
This photograph captures them at their most elemental — the long exposure turning the surf to silk around the boulders, a brooding sky of cloud and light above, and the stones themselves sitting unbothered by the weather or the centuries.
Shot in high contrast black and white, this is a print that works beautifully in a light, neutral interior. The monochrome finish gives it a timeless quality that suits any space.

The sun holds the ranges above Queenstown long after it has left the water below. Peaks lit gold, snow holding on the tops, while Lake Wakatipu lies still and silver in the shadow. The town itself is small in the frame — a scatter of rooftops and road below the hill, the forest dark around it.
This is Queenstown before the long winter night descends, a last showing of light from the day.

Across the lake, the mountains are always present, but not always seen. Then the clouds shift, and for a moment, the snow-dusted peaks appear.
