Auckland Maps
The Map Room at a great backyard is home to our curated collection of vintage New Zealand maps, handcrafted in our boutique studio on acrylic or satin ACM.
In the Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau section you'll find everything from Dr Ferdinand von Hochstetter's extraordinary 1859 geological surveys to the remarkable Auckland and Environs series of the 1920s. Together they tell the story of a city growing from a young volcanic settlement into the vibrant metropolis we know today.
Each map is available individually or as part of a set, printed to order in a range of sizes. Proudly made here in New Zealand.
These vintage maps capture Auckland's inner suburbs at a fascinating moment in the city's history.
Sheet 4 charts Grey Lynn, Ponsonby, Morningside and Kingsland in extraordinary detail — every street, section and borough boundary laid out, Masters Creek still winding naturally through the landscape, and the great open space of what would become Eden Park just beginning to take shape.
Sheet 5 tells the story of the eastern suburbs — Parnell, Newmarket, Remuera and the Domain — with the Auckland wharves and Railway Station visible at the top, Hobson Bay stretching out to the east and The Domain sits in green at the heart of the map.
Sheet 6 extends east to the bays — Mission Bay, St Heliers and Ladies Bay along the coastline, the Ōrākei Basin shimmering to the west, and the vast undeveloped District of Tāmaki stretching inland. It's a reminder of just how recently these now-busy suburbs were open farmland."
Part of the Auckland and Environs survey series by Surveyor-General WT Neill, together these historical maps paint a vivid picture of inner Auckland in 1924 — a city of tram lines and timber villas, borough boundaries and undeveloped sections, caught between its colonial past and its modern future.
These maps would look superb hanging together on your office or lounge wall. Their warm hand-coloured aesthetic — with gold streets, teal waterways and soft green reserves — would make a timeless addition to any home.
They would make a superb gift for proud Aucklanders, anyone with family roots in these suburbs, or for lovers of the city's rich history.
These maps come in a 8 × 10 aspect, and we offer two different finishing options. You can choose one map, a pair or a trio. Please choose from the following selection to make them your own.

This geological map of the Southern Province of Auckland by Dr Ferdinand von Hochstetter from 1859 is one of the most extraordinary maps we have ever offered.
Hochstetter arrived in New Zealand in 1858 as part of the Austrian Novara expedition — one of the great scientific voyages of the 19th century — and what was meant to be a brief stop became a landmark chapter in New Zealand's scientific history. This map is the result of his pioneering geological surveys, published by the world-renowned Justus Perthes press in Gotha, Germany.
The detail is breathtaking. Bold reds mark the volcanic landscapes around Rotorua and Tarawera. Green circles chart the hot springs and geysers scattered across the central plateau. The great Waikato Basin stretches across the centre of the map, and two inset maps — one of Lake Taupō, one of the Lake District — add further depth to an already remarkable document.
This map would look superb hanging in your office, study or lounge. Its rich scientific colour palette — volcanic reds, geothermal greens and soft geological pastels — would make a truly statement addition to any home.
It would make a superb gift for lovers of New Zealand history, science enthusiasts, or for anyone who appreciates that this country was once genuinely uncharted territory.

This geological map of the Istmus of Auckland with its Extinct Volcanoes by Dr Ferdinand von Hochstetter, drawn in 1859, is one of the most remarkable maps of Auckland ever produced.
Hochstetter arrived in New Zealand as part of the Austrian Novara expedition — what was meant to be a brief stopover became a landmark chapter in New Zealand's scientific history. This map is the extraordinary result — every volcanic crater, scoria cone and lava stream across the entire Auckland isthmus individually identified and mapped for the first time. Rangitoto commands the top right corner in breathtaking detail, and a young Auckland city sits quietly at the heart of a landscape still being understood.
This map would look superb hanging in your office or lounge. Its rich volcanic palette would make a truly statement addition to any home.
It would make a superb gift for lovers of Auckland history, geology enthusiasts, or for anyone fascinated by the volcanic city we live on top of — and largely take for granted.

These historic maps capture the North Shore in the 1920s; an established community quietly superior to anything on the other side of the harbour.
Sheet 1 — Birkenhead and Northcote — charts the western shore in precise detail, from the ferry wharves and timber sections to a stretch of coastline where, one day, Auckland's great harbour bridge would stand. In 1928 that bridge was still three decades away — but the city was already dreaming.
Sheet 2 — Devonport and Takapuna — tells a different story. Established, leafy and unhurried, these suburbs sit confidently on the eastern shore, their streets already well-formed and their character distinct. Some things don't change.
Together these two maps paint a vivid picture of North Shore life a hundred years ago, with ferry commutes, coastal sections and a harbour that set them apart.
These maps would look superb hanging together on your lounge or office wall. Their soft cream and sage tones, with ferry routes threading between the bays and the harbour foreshore picked out in teal, would make a timeless addition to any North Shore home.
They would make a superb gift for anyone who grew up exploring the tunnels at North Head, or who collected shells on Cheltenham Beach as a kid.

These historic maps from the 1920s capture the southern and western suburbs of Auckland as the city spread its wings into the surrounding countryside.
Sheet 7 — Mount Roskill — charts the western suburbs from the established streets of Avondale to the quiet bays of Blockhouse Bay and Wesley Bay. Much of what is now dense suburban Auckland was still open farmland — the sections waiting for a city that hadn't quite arrived yet.
Sheet 8 — One Tree Hill — has One Tree Hill Domain sitting magnificently at its heart, Cornwall Park spreading around it in green, while the Borough of Onehunga lines the Manukau Harbour below.
Sheet 9 — Mount Wellington and Otahuhu — tells the story of the eastern and southern fringes, featuring the Panmure Basin and the Tamaki River winding along the eastern edge.
Part of the Auckland and Environs survey series, these maps would look superb hanging together on your lounge or office wall. Their warm cream and gold tones — borough boundaries picked out in red, reserves in green — would make a timeless addition to any Auckland home.
They would make a superb gift for anyone who grew up knowing every path in Cornwall Park, for anyone with roots in Avondale, Onehunga or Otahuhu, or for anyone who loves the story of how a city fills in its blank spaces.

Oneroa, Waiheke Island — Vintage Topographical Map Print
This vintage Oneroa map from 1944 would be a huge hit with anyone who's holidayed on Waiheke Island. It covers the full western end of the island — Oneroa, Ostend, Surfdale, Cable Bay, Rocky Bay — with Motuihe sitting alone to the left in the Hauraki Gulf. The contour lines, orchard markings, bays, tracks, and place names record the island as it was before the vineyards and weekenders arrived in numbers.
At home in a bach, holiday home, or any space with a relaxed, coastal feel. Also works well in a city apartment for someone who keeps a boat or makes regular trips out to the island. The soft blue of the surrounding sea, warm ochre of the land, and green patches of bush give it a quiet, considered palette that holds up well as wall art.
The perfect gift for anyone with a connection to Waiheke — long-time residents, regular visitors, or families with roots on the island across generations.

In 1929 the Village of Howick had shaken off its origins as a Fencible settlement — built for retired British soldiers and their families — and had become a town in its own right. This detailed district map captures Howick’s streets, sections, and shoreline at a moment when the gulf was still the main road and Pakuranga was just a neighbour.
Made for a Howick or east Auckland home — particularly striking in a lounge or hallway where the warm cream and ochre tones can do their work. This map especially suits interiors that lean Scandinavian or coastal.
It makes a perfect gift for the east Aucklander with long roots in the area, and a thoughtful housewarming or birthday gift for anyone who grew up on those streets and would get a quiet thrill seeing them rendered in 1929 ink.
