This is Glenorchy as it was imagined in 1864; a brand new town, freshly surveyed and full of possibility at the head of ‘Lake Wakatip.’ This map predates the sealed roads, the tourism, the film crews — it's Glenorchy before anyone outside Otago had heard of it.
Drawn by George McBarr, Assistant Surveyor, and produced by the Otago Survey Lithographic Press under Chief Surveyor J.T. Thomson, this plan captures the town at its very beginning. A reserve for Public Gardens and Recreation Grounds is marked out with quiet optimism - now the golf course. W.G. Rees — one of the region's earliest and most significant runholders — has his land noted right on the map. The Cemetery Reserve, the Cattle Market, and a small lagoon along the lake edge all speak to a settlement being carefully, methodically brought into existence.
Its warm parchment tones and delicate hand-colouring make it a natural fit for a hallway, study, or living room — equally at home in a modern interior as in a more traditional setting. It would also look wonderful in a crib or holiday home in the Queenstown Lakes area, where it would never fail to draw a comment from guests.
As a gift, it's hard to beat. Perfect for anyone with family roots in Glenorchy or the wider Otago region, for lovers of New Zealand history, or for the map enthusiast in your life who thinks they've seen everything. It would also make a deeply personal and lasting gift for someone who has lived, worked, or fallen in love with this corner of the South Island.

This 1929 map of the Borough of Queenstown is the perfect piece to add a touch of vintage elegance to your home — a snapshot of one of New Zealand's most beloved towns, long before the ski fields, the bungy jumps, and the queues for Fergburger.
Drawn by the New Zealand Lands and Survey Department under Chief Surveyor H.S. Galbraith, the map captures Queenstown in extraordinary detail. The street grid fans out from the lakefront, with Camp Street, Ballarat Street and the Esplanade all clearly marked. Queenstown Bay and its little peninsula sit at the heart of the plan, Lake Wakatipu stretching away to the south toward Frankton Arm. Public buildings are listed in a key at the bottom — the Bank of New Zealand, Presbyterian and Anglican churches, the County Council Buildings — a town taking itself very seriously indeed.
It would look brilliant framed in a kitchen, living room, or hallway, and would make a stunning feature piece in a home office or crib. The warm parchment tones work beautifully in both classic and contemporary interiors.
This map would make a perfect gift for anyone who has lived in or fallen in love with Queenstown or for Otago locals with long memories.
