Hochstetter arrived in New Zealand as part of the Austrian Novara expedition — what was meant to be a brief stopover became a landmark chapter in New Zealand's scientific history. This map is the extraordinary result — every volcanic crater, scoria cone and lava stream across the entire Auckland isthmus individually identified and mapped for the first time. Rangitoto commands the top right corner in breathtaking detail, and a young Auckland city sits quietly at the heart of a landscape still being understood.
