This Pukeko Postcard from a great backyard shows the bright, clumsy and funny pūkeko, a recent import from Australia - about 400 years ago.

Both abundant and widespread, the cheery pūkeko, or swamp hen, is a favourite of many New Zealanders, having even won the highly contested NZ Bird of the Year competition. Although they're not great flyers, they are good waders, swimmers and runners.
