Hochstetter Map ‘Istmus of Auckland with its Extinct Volcanoes’ (1859)
This map of the ‘Istmus of Auckland with its Extinct Volcanoes’ by Dr Ferdinand von Hochstetter was drawn in 1859.
Hochstetter arrived in New Zealand as part of the Austrian Novara expedition. This map is the result of his extraordinary geological work — every volcanic crater, scoria cone and lava stream across the entire Auckland isthmus individually identified and mapped for the first time. Rangitoto commands the top right corner in breathtaking detail, and a young Auckland city sits quietly at the heart of a landscape still being understood.
This map would look superb hanging in your office or lounge. Its rich volcanic palette would make a truly statement addition to any home.
A fitting gift for lovers of Auckland history, geology enthusiasts, or for anyone fascinated by the volcanic city we live on top of, and largely take for granted.
This map comes in a 8 x 10 aspect and we offer two different finishing options. Please choose from the following selection to make it your own.

Perfect for any room where gallery quality is optimal, our Acrylic Prints are also ideal for bathrooms and wet areas.
Your map will be printed in our boutique print studio on Kodak Professional substrate using archival inks, and then mounted in-house on crystal clear acrylic for a back-lit appearance and unrivaled vibrancy.
Finally, it will be seamed with 4mm ACM (Aluminium Composite Material) for a modern frameless finish. A custom hanger is attached before the print is securely packaged and sent to you, ready to hang on your wall.
